Cooper Webb motivated for American double!
2021 AMA Supercross champion Cooper Webb wants to go all out for the American outdoor title. He indicated this the day before yesterday during a special KTM press conference. A supercross-motocross double would be the first for his team, Red bull-KTM, since Ryan Dungey in 2015. Today the AMA Nationals begin in Pala, California.
After a grueling Supercross season - from the beginning of January to the beginning of this month - the American riders have to compete in 12 outdoor competitions. The 25-year-old Webb was unable to complete the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross championship last year. In 2020, Webb's training partner Zach Osborne took the title. Cooper Webb also talked about the aftermath of a tough SX campaign that other riders such as Jason Anderson, Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac had to deal with.
The two-time No. 450SX champion explained how his break from competition last summer due to a persistent back problem ultimately turned out to be positive. For 2021, however, he has set his sights on the SX – MX double. In the 250, the rider from North Carolina has already won titles in motocross and supercross.
“I haven't been able to win that 450MX title yet,” he said. “He's definitely on the list of what I want to achieve. In any case, it will be a long championship that will continue until September this year. Every championship is a goal and this gives me extra motivation after throwing in the towel last year,” he added. “There are a lot of good guys and it is a strong field, but I have the team and the people around me that make a title fight possible.”
After winning five of the last seven 450SX championships, Ian Harrison-led Red Bull KTM are now aiming for their first outdoor trophy since Ryan Dungey became champion in 2015.
