When will there be a motocross in our country again?
Yesterday there was yet another consultation committee in our country since the start of the corona crisis last year in March. Many sectors are eagerly awaiting relaxation of the measures, including organizers of motocross competitions.
Since March 2020, very little motocross has been done in our country. Apart from the permitted (and limited) training sessions, there was only the MXGP triptych in Lommel, which had to do without an audience. Despite the will of the motor sports associations to have that first competition take place very quickly, they are also bound by national rules. And they received another update yesterday.
For the month of May, outdoor events are allowed for a maximum of 50 people. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand that a motocross race is not feasible with this rule. In June, events for up to 200 people can be organized outdoors. The condition is that 80 percent of people with underlying conditions have been vaccinated and that fewer than 500 beds in intensive care units have been occupied by corona patients. Our government expects that all people with a risk profile can be vaccinated in May. A face mask and physical distancing are mandatory at these events.
Also last year there was a period between two lockdowns when events were allowed with a maximum of 200 people. Back then, no one agreed to organize a competition and that makes some sense. You can't make it financially with 200 people on a motocross. It is also not practically feasible to organize a race with such a restriction. We don't see it happening yet to organize such an expensive event if you know in advance that it will be a financial debacle.
Are there possibilities to organize competitions in July? On May 11, the Consultation Committee will again consider the exit strategy. Then there must be more clarity about what is possible in July and August. The corona crisis is in a phase of good prospects and at the same time a dire situation in hospitals. The population wants to quickly return to a normal life, but you already understood that this will happen in very small steps. We hope together with you that it will not be a procession of Echternach and wish you all a lot of courage to get through the coming months in good health. Just like you, we long for motocross, a cozy riders' park, that starting gate that drops and the wisdom that is delivered afterwards in the tent behind a pint of Belgian barley beer.
