VIDEO: The Pichon – Everts duel in Valkenswaard
In 2003, people no longer talk about the cylinder capacity to indicate a class, but about MX1, MX2 and MX3. From that year on, the brand new MX1 class will become the most important category with the fastest riders in its ranks.
In the same year, the format of only one series per category was also used. During this period the four-stroke teams arrive and can still be seen together in the heats. For example, Stefan Everts is on a four-stroke Yamaha from the Rinaldi stable and Mickael Pichon is on a two-stroke Suzuki from Sylvain Geboers' GP team. The opener of the MX1 season was won by the Frenchman in Bellpuig, Spain.
The second race of the season takes place in the sand of Valkenswaard. Most experts put Everts forward as the favorite, but Pichon is an all-rounder. The two fighting cocks go to the bone in the duels on Dutch soil. Moreover, it is a battle between a four-stroke and a two-stroke and that gives the race an extra dimension. And to top it all off, a young guy named Strijbos comes and sticks his nose to the window.
