Technology: this is how you preserve a two-stroke exhaust
Some two-stroke exhausts are true works of art. The sheet steel pipe is assembled piece by piece using expert welding. These aftermarket exhausts are often an "eye-catcher" on a two-stroke motocross bike. But they also rust quickly, so we consulted an expert.
An expert showed us a method to protect the exhausts and thus protect the beautiful appearance in the long term. The intention is that you apply this treatment to a brand new exhaust that has not been treated with heat-resistant varnish. This concerns the protection of a new naked sheet steel exhaust for two-stroke engines.
When purchasing the exhaust, the first job you need to do is degrease it. You do this with a degreaser such as brake cleaner or contact cleaner. This way you remove any traces of grease that could influence the treatment. Oils used in the manufacturing process or even on your skin can negatively affect the results. After this, do not touch the exhaust with your hands again. Then take a can of silicone spray with which you generously spray the entire exhaust.
Then you need to let the engine warm up. You do this by letting it idle for a while so that the silicone oil can burn in. You can give a little more gas in between to increase the temperature and you will see that smoke forms. That's no problem. Spraying some extra silicone in between certainly doesn't hurt. We recommend not driving to allow the silicone spray to burn in because you run the risk of getting dirt or moisture on the exhaust that will burn in with it. Let the exhaust cool down again.
The intention is that you repeat this treatment three times. So first degrease again, then spray with silicone spray and let it burn in by running the engine warm. Good luck!
