Gajser wins in Maggiora, Van Horebeek a close second
The first test for the Italian championship is over. Tim Gajser won both heats without any opposition in a muddy Maggiora. Jeremy Van Horebeek finishes second in the ranking.
MX1
Gajser was the first to sprint away in series 1 and chose the open water. The competition only saw him again at the finish. Van Horebeek immediately moved to second place to consolidate this at the finish. Alberto Ferato came third. The second series was also a breeze for the Slovenian because he again started in the lead so as not to tolerate anyone in his wake. Veteran David Philippaerts started in third place while Van Horebeek was less successful at the gate.
He had to start the first lap in P8. The Beta driver then resolutely attacked on a slightly drier track than during the first series. He systematically moved up until he ended up in the wheel of Alessandro Lupino who was in second place. However, the series was one lap short for The Jerre and had to conclude this creditable catch-up race in third place. Tim Gajser won the series ahead of Lupino. Philippaerts showed that he still has the speed and finished fourth in the final standings. Alessio Chiodi was able to finish the race in thirteenth.
MX2
In the MX2 class, GasGas rider Kevin Horgmo took the holeshot and remained in the lead for a long time, but eventually had to let Ruben Fernandez go ahead. The Spaniard won the heat ahead of Horgmo and Gianluca Facchetti. The fast Fantic pilot Nicholas Lapucci was in the top five but crashed twice in the mud and had to settle for eleventh place.
In series two, Gianluca Facchetti shot off like a comet with Horgmo and Fernandez in his wake. After a few corners Horgmo took the lead but had to leave it to Fernandez a little later. Facchetti had to let go after a few laps, while Lapucci put the pressure on by overtaking Horgmo on lap six, who was then in second place. Lapucci goes on the attack decisively on lap ten and attacks Fernandez's leading position, but the Spaniard is tough. The two regularly switch positions, but in the end Fernandez chooses his money's worth. Two-stroke rider Lapucci wins the series and Fernandez the race.
The second stage for the Italian Prestige Championship will take place on April 25 in Mantova.
