BMB and circuit operators in consultation about noise problems
On Wednesday, April 14, BMB chairman Jos Driessen organized a meeting with the Belgian MX circuit operators, the FMWB and Motorsport Vlaanderen regarding the noise problem. The reason was the sudden closure of the Honda park in Olmen as a result of a decision by the Council of State.
Immediately after this decision, various steps were taken. For example, a meeting took place at the beginning of March between Motorsport Vlaanderen, the minister of sport, Ben Weyts and the minister of the environment, Zuhal Demir. Both ministers committed themselves to finding a solution. However, they also called for urgent action from the sector to reduce noise.
The first contacts have also already been made with a number of manufacturers who are ready to find the necessary technical solutions if the FIM reduces the noise standards. In the meantime, FIM Europe sent a survey to all European associations to obtain an overview of this problem in the various European countries. The FIM just announced that it will soon organize a webinar dedicated to this theme with all federations.
The BMB, Motorsport Vlaanderen, the FMWB and the Belgian MX circuits ask that the FIM urgently work on a drastic reduction of the minimum noise limits in motocross. Currently these are set at 114 dba measured according to the FIM 2-meter max method (sound meter 2 meters from the engine at an angle of 45° with engine at maximum speed). The desire is to reduce this to a level between 95dba and 100dba. This is technically feasible and is extremely important for the future of our training circuits and our sport tout cours.
The BMB will take further steps, together with our neighboring countries that have the same problems, towards the FIM to try to achieve this goal. It was agreed to provide further consultation between the unions and the circuits on a regular basis to closely monitor this issue.
Meanwhile, the BMB is calling on all motocross riders to check the noise level of their machine before leaving for the training circuit to avoid problems on site. The future of our sport depends on it!
