The 100-year anniversary of JUMBO is celebrating
This year JUMBO is celebrating their centenary, but the Brabant company has actually existed since 1979, which is 41 years, right? “The best message every day, for 100 years”, is the slogan of the JUMBO, which in the past supported the KNMV ONK (now Dutch Masters of Motocross). Today, the Veghel company is still active as a sponsor of Jeffrey Herlings, Etienne Bax, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Negaan, Husqvarna-JUMBO-BT Racing, Future MX Team, Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing and Riley Racing-Yamaha.
The first JUMBO was founded in 1979 in Tilburg, where Jan Meurs came up with the name. He competed with another supermarket in Tilburg, namely Torro. The name Jumbo (elephant) made more of an impression than the Torro (bull), was his simple reasoning.
Just four years later, Meurs' store was sold to the Van Eerd family. This family ensured that more stores were quickly opened in the South of the Netherlands. More chains were subsequently taken over by Van Eerd. Due to these acquisitions of Super de Boer, Em-Te and C1000 plus our own expansion, there are now approximately 700 JUMBO Supermarkets!
To celebrate the 100th anniversary, we have to go back to 1921 when Johan van Eerd opened a wholesale food business! The first supermarket of the 'Van Eerd Group' was founded in 1963 by Karel van Eerd, the father of Frits, who we know as a car and motorsport enthusiast. That 'Kroon' supermarket in Schijndel is more or less the beginning of JUMBO as we currently know it thanks to the support for our sport.
