AMA 250SX Preview: Who Will Succeed Sexton?
Unlike other years, the 250X East will be the first to start their title battle this year. The key question here is of course who will succeed Chase Sexton - champion in 2020 and 2019! We look ahead to the championship that starts this weekend in Houston
Due to the closure of GEICO Honda, top talent Jett Lawrence had to look for a new employer. However, that was quickly found because Honda did not just let their future star leave. The Australian impressed regularly last year and we think he is the favorite for the title, but it will be a tough job!
In any case, Austin Forkner will sell his skin dearly. The Pro Circuit Kawasaki rider narrowly missed out on the title and that hurts him! After ten seasons on Honda, Christian Craig switched to Yamaha. According to the American, he needed that machine to take the final step towards the title. We are curious whether the 29-year-old veteran can now finish the job.
After these three, we in Colt Nichols (Star Racing Yamaha) are certainly a contender for victories and so is RJ Hampshire (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna). It remains to be seen whether both will participate in the title battle. How far top talent Maximus Vohland (intro photo) can get in his SX debut season is also anyone's guess. But the fact that the son of former GP rider Tallon Vohland was immediately included in the KTM factory team says a lot about his potential. So the 17-year-old Vohland is the teammate of Cooper Webb and Marvin Musquin. Although expectations are high, he has time to develop further thanks to a three-year deal.
We add to the riders already mentioned; Joe Shimoda (Pro Circuit Kawasaki) and GasGas rider Michael Mosiman. We also see three European riders in action; Thomas Do (F), Dylan Woodcock (GB) and the Italian Lorenzo Camporese. There is a 7 hour time difference with Houston, so when we wake up on Sunday morning the first cards have been shuffled.
