Dakar Rally: second day victory for Joan Barreda Bort
It seems that the Dakar for motorcycles will once again be extremely exciting this year because the top riders alternate for a win every day. An emerging trend is that the first riders to start experience a disadvantage when navigating. Today Joan Barreda wins stage 4 from Wadi Ad-Dawasir to Riyadh.
The Spaniard from the Monster Energy Honda Team needed a time of 337:2:46 for the special over 50 km, making him well faster than the rest of the field. Second was Ross Branch from Botswana at 5:57 and third place went to debutant Daniel Sanders. Today's stage was the longest of this edition with 813 km of which 337 km counted for the ranking. Walter Roelants is increasingly getting into the right flow and came in at 59th. The Dutchmen Paul Spierings and Olaf Harmsen turned 58th in 88. th.
In the standings of this Dakar Rally, Xavier de Soultrait takes the lead with a mere 15 seconds lead over Barreda. Kevin Benavides is third, 3:24 minutes behind the leader. Yamaha rider Adrien Van Beveren is just outside the top ten, 9 minutes behind the leader. Tomorrow stage 5 is on the program with a ride from Riyadh to Al Qaisumah. In this tough ride over 456 km, the pilots are presented with a mix of sand and stones.
