Dakar Rally: Sunderland wins penultimate stage
What unprecedented days it has been with the motorcycles in the Dakar Rally. Yesterday it seemed that Honda was going to make a bid for another overall victory, but we no longer dare to say this with certainty after today's ride. Joan Barreda simply missed a fuel stop and ran out of gas in the dunes of Saudi Arabia. Sam Sunderland wins today's stage and joins the battle for the overall victory.
Due to Barreda's missed fuel stop, he threw away a possible victory and gave up in disappointment. Sunderland played a fairly anonymous match in the first week, but they are on target now that they are going for the marbles. He is now between the Hondas of leader Benavides and Ricky Brabec. So tomorrow it will be between these three in the last stage of this 2021 edition.
Walter Roelants overcame his discomfort and finished 58thth just over 3 hours from Sunderland. Paul Spierings is still growing in this match because he scored a great 22th place. Olaf Harmsen came in 65thth into the bivouac. Tomorrow is the last ride from Yanbu to Jeddah and it promises to provide fireworks for the bikes. Kevin Benavides, Sam Sunderland and Ricky Brabec are just minutes apart, so anything is still possible for them. It is also a duel between Honda and KTM for the overall victory in this Dakar. The ride covers 247 km and includes quite a few dunes. The three top players now have to work hard and tomorrow the throttle will be opened to the rafters.
