Former Dakar winner Hubert Auriol passed away
Bad news never comes alone these days. Today Hubert Auriol died from the effects of the coronavirus. The Frenchman won the Dakar Rally three times and was also director of the event for nine years. He had been ill for several months.
He won the rally with a BMW in 1981 and 1983. Auriol was nicknamed “the African” because he was born in Ethiopia. In 1987 he was in contention with Cyril Neveu and had to throw in the towel on the penultimate day with two broken ankles. This edition is known as the most exciting ever. In 1992 he entered the Dakar with a car (Mitsubishi), becoming the first winner to win both the motorcycles and the cars. After his active career, he was director of the Dakar Rally for nine years. Auriol had been fighting for his life for weeks after becoming infected with the coronavirus. He passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 68.
