Technology: the importance of the right Phillips screwdriver
Every do-it-yourselfer has to deal with it. We are talking about the annoyance of a cross screw that has to be loosened and professionally turned to the sharks by yourself. Even with a new screwdriver, the bolt does not come loose and eventually the crosshead is completely stripped, so you have to use crude tools.
The reason often lies in using the wrong Phillips screwdriver. Because there are two types in circulation, you always have to wonder whether you have the right version in your hands. There are two types of crossheads: Pozidriv (PZ) and Philips (PH). The problem is that both are very similar, so you quickly end up using the wrong tools.
Your dirt bike also has a lot of cross screws, so you have to be very careful when they need to be loosened. Externally it is difficult to determine which cross screws you are dealing with. However, there is a handy trick. If you insert the right screwdriver into the Phillips head, it will stay in place without support. If the screwdriver falls out, it is best to use the other type.
And then there's something else. Owners of a pre-2008 Japanese motorcycle may have to deal with yet another type of crosshead. Until that year, the Japanese used their own standard, the so-called JIS. The three letters stand for Japanese Industrial Standard. Both Phillips and Pozidriv are not suitable for loosening the JIS bolts. At the time, these bolts were mainly used to screw the engine block together. If you have an older Japanese motorcycle at home, you should look for screwdrivers of the JIS Jawsfit type, indicated with the letter P. However, the screwdriver sets with JIS standard are still readily available.
