Pomeroy discovers his first GP victory days later!
The 250 FIM 1973cc World Championship started in Spain. Jim Pomeroy had come to Europe at the invitation of Bultaco in preparation for the AMA season. He would compete in the first GP of the season and then return home. The American won his first Grand Prix, but he only found out days later! Pomperoy is the first American to win a world championship match.
At the Sabadell circuit, Pomeroy wins the first round ahead of Hans Maisch. The German finished third in the second heat while Pomeroy crossed the finish line in fourth. The competition management honors Maisch as the winner because she still used the previous points system. One point was awarded for the first, two for the second and so on, so that the rider with the fewest points won the race. Maisch (2-3) and Pomeroy (1-4) both scored five points but with a better second heat, Maisch was declared the winner. It later became clear that the FIM had introduced a new points system with 15 points for the winner, 12 for the second, 10 for the third, 8 for the fourth. That meant Pomeroy scored 23 points to Maisch's 22. When the FIM published the results two days after the competition, it turned out that Pomeroy from Yakima (Washington) had become the winner.
Bultaco immediately signed Pomeroy to contest the remainder of the 1973 World Championship. He remained competitive for most of the year, including a second place at the Italian GP. Pomeroy finished seventh in the final standings of the World Championship and went on to win two more Grand Prix later in his career.
