KNMV launches plan for preserving motocross circuits
The Royal Dutch Motorcyclists Association (KNMV) is introducing a master plan to safeguard the future of motocross accommodations in the Netherlands. In collaboration with clubs and riders and supported by World Cup toppers Jeffrey Herlings and Glenn Coldenhoff, action is being taken, because: 'If we do NX, then MX will disappear!'
More than seventy motocross circuits are affiliated with the KNMV. In 2019, consultancy firm Peutz mapped out a rough overview of the status of the legalization (i.e. the permits and the zoning plan) of these accommodations. The zoning plan and permits are in order for less than a fifth of the 72 jobs examined. At the rest of the circuits, the vast majority, permits are missing or insufficient. A cross circuit also does not fit in with the zoning plan everywhere. Accommodations in such a situation are, at best, only tolerated.
This is not a sustainable situation in the long term. The pressure on motorsport from society is increasing, especially in the areas of noise and emissions. The Dutch cross world is very aware of this. The clubs, riders and the KNMV work together to secure the future of circuits, without losing sight of the world around them. Fellow motor sports association MON is also aware and discussions are taking place about how they can join in.
MX Master Plan
In consultation with a number of clubs, an MX master plan has been drawn up that is based on the three pillars below, with a brief summary of the most important focus for now.
- Legalization: Consultancy firm Peutz will assist clubs in the legalization process.
- Safety: Installation of electronic yellow flag systems on all tracks that require them.
- Introduction of a mandatory course for new licensees.
- Sustainability and ecology: Consultancy firm Peutz provides tailor-made advice to clubs for sustainable innovation.
- Climate-neutral competition event by 2025 at the latest.
The detailed outline for the MX master plan can be found here on the KNMV website. All steps taken together contribute to the legalization and continued existence of motocross accommodations, a positive image of motocross among the outside world and understanding and acceptance among stakeholders.
Dutch MXGP top riders Jeffrey Herlings and Glenn Coldenhoff and five-time world champion Joël Smets from Belgium, among others, openly support the plan, for which the first projects have already been initiated. The first results will be visible next spring. Because doing nothing is not an option and neither is waiting any longer: "If we do NX, MX will disappear!"
