VIDEO: Antonio Cairoli wins his first ever GP
In 2004, the Sicilian was a noble unknown, but that would soon change. Antonio Cairoli rode in the MX2 class for the first time on a Yamaha. The World Cup that year was a battle between Kiwi Ben Townley and South African Tyla Rattray.
However, you could not call it a real battle because Townley won 21 of the 32 heats and became world champion by a very large margin. On May 16, the GP circus will arrive in Lichtenvoorde, Netherlands. Towley wins the race ahead of Rattray who finished second twice. However, there is also an Italian on the podium. Antonio Cairoli puts his nose to the window for the first time and achieves his first podium in MX2.
Good things come quickly and that was certainly true in 2004. In August there is the GP at the Citadel of Namur. Alessio Chiodi wins the first heat but drops out in the reprise. Ben Townley had to retire with a broken engine and did not score any points in the first series. Tyla Rattray cannot find his feet on the Citadel and cannot benefit from Townley's zero score. Antonio Cairoli came second in the first heat and managed to finish fourth in heat two. It was enough for his very first GP victory and in such a legendary place. Below you can see the two series of MX2 in full on a sun-drenched Citadel with the Sicilian in a leading role for the first time.
