EMX125 final leaves bitter aftertaste for Florian Miot
KTM Diga Junior Racing's Floran Miot was in a good starting position to finish his European Championship season strongly in Lommel. After a solid 8th place in the first moto, fourth place was within reach. Unfortunately, things went wrong for the young Frenchman in the very last lap.
With a sixth in time practice for Miot and a sixteenth for Daniel Volovich in the first group, both KTM Diga Junior Racing riders got off to a decent start in their final EMX125 event of the 2020 season.
Despite his start outside the top 10, Florian quickly rose to the top. Although he advanced to 8th place in the opening round, the youngest of the Miot brothers was unable to make enough of a difference to win. However, Flo's final offensive was impressive. In a strong final sprint towards seventh place, he finally crossed the line a few tenths behind the seventh, Ivano Van Erp.
Although Florian is working hard on his comeback after the heel injury he sustained in Faenza, he showed again where he stands during the final series in Lommel. Just like in his first heat last Saturday, Miot recorded regular, top-3 lap times. For five laps the #247 KTM Diga Junior Racing bike hung in third. With four laps to go, he lost third place, but he was on course for a nice fourth place and another top-5 in the final standings.
Unfortunately, the former French 125cc champion had an unfortunate crash in the waves in the final lap. A scan of the lower back showed that Florian suffered compression of the lower vertebrae. However, with a little rest, Florian should soon be back to his old self. In the final standings we find Miot in 12th place.
For Daniel Volovich, the last match in Lommel was one to quickly forget. After a technical problem in the first moto, the White Russian had to deal with two major crashes. So he had to give up
Next weekend, KTM Diga Junior Racing's WMX rider TJ O'Hare will compete in Arco di Trento, Italy, for her final race of the season. TJ is currently 10th, but she still has a realistic chance of improving her position in the final standings.
Dirk Saelen, KTM Diga Junior Racing team manager: “This is not the way we wanted to end the EMX season! It is clear that everyone is very disappointed and Florian (Miot) is, first and foremost, disappointed. You cannot deny that he gave his all to the end. He rode a strong second round and showed this week in Lommel that he was gradually returning to his best form. After his fourth places we knew he had the speed to go for a podium place. Unfortunately, this is also part of the sport. On the other hand, fortunately Florian did not sustain any serious injuries yesterday. For Daniel (Volovich) it was a particularly difficult last race, but I think he has learned a lot about himself and racing at this level this season. After this intense week of home races we are now looking forward to the best possible result with TJ O'Hare in Italy.”
