TBT: Cairoli takes sixth title in front of his own audience
It's not yet #ThrowBackThursday, but it is time to look back. We go back to September 9, 2012 when Antonio Cairoli won his sixth world title in Faenza. The Italian has now won three titles, is married and is the father of a son. Yet 'TC222' was on stage in Faenza last Sunday!
Antonio Cairoli has secured his sixth World title in front of his own audience. The Italian won both heats on the completely renovated Faenza circuit. After his dramatic performance last week in Lierop, Christophe Pourcel now did them some good. The Frenchman finished second in both heats and Clement Desalle (3-4) was on the podium. Very striking was the strong riding of Josh Coppins (9-13) while Marc de Reuver (16-16) managed to get into the World Championship points in both heats.
From pole position, Sebastien Pourcel takes the best start for the first heat. He is followed by Coppins, Shaun Simpson and Cairoli who quickly passes the Yamaha riders. Before the first corner, a number of riders make a mistake, including Maxi Nagl. Cairoli calmly watches Pourcel's lines before switching gears after seven minutes of the match. The Italian takes the lead while Christophe passes his brother on the same lap. No matter what the former MX2 World Champion tries, he cannot close the gap on Cairoli. Desalle also manages to get past Sebastien quite quickly, who finds it very difficult, especially in the final phase. Desalle comes third ahead of fellow countryman Ken de Dycker and Shaun Simpson. Coppins is good for a good ninth place ahead of the oldest Pourcel. De Reuver takes five World Cup points by finishing 16th.
Sebastien also makes the best start in the second round, ahead of Cairoli, who again manages to strike quickly. Christophe needs two laps to get into second place, but he puts the pressure on Cairoli. The audience is holding their breath because the Kawasaki rider really gives everything. It remains exciting until the last round, De Reuver narrowly manages to stay out of the 'claws' of winner Cairoli. Pourcel comes second again this time ahead of Gautier Paulin, Desalle and Sebastien! De Reuver is now good for 16th place.
The final will be held on the Teutschenthal circuit, this race is on the calendar for September 22-23 and then we will also see Ken Roczen in action!
