Ricardo Phoelich takes day victory and lead at Quads
Ricardo Phoelich has taken the lead in the standings in the ONK quads. On the Witte Ruysheuvel circuit he won both heats and passed Job Smits, Joe Maessen and Rick Haverdil in the standings. Second place this day went to Rick Haverdil with two second place finishes in the heats. With a fourth and third place in the heats, Job Smits also took his place on the podium.
First heat
The first heat started without Mike van Grinsven who had still participated in the timed training. However, his ankle injury continues to bother him too much and he decided not to start. It was Haverdil who was the fastest ahead of Richard Ruttenberg, Phoelich, Maessen, and de Cuyper (Bel). Ruttenberg soon choked on a corner and that was the start of a rapid setback for him. As a result, it was Smits who entered the top five. Haverdil seemed to break away from the rest in the first laps, with Phoelich and Maessen behind them, who were followed at some distance by de Cuyper and Smits. However, Haverdil had to drop his pace due to back problems and it was halfway through the heat that Phoelich took the lead with Maessen in his wake. Maessen was unable to continue the fight due to mechanical failure and came to a standstill a few bends before the finish. As a result, the gentlemen behind him moved up one place and it was Haverdil who crossed the finish line second behind Phoelich. De Cuyper had largely managed to close the gap with Haverdil, but ended up in third place, 6 seconds behind Haverdil. Well behind, Smits crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of Tuur van Hoof (Bel).
Second heat
It was Haverdil again who was the fastest ahead of Gijs Wentink, de Cuyper, Phoelich and Ruben van Lith. Wentink quickly saw de Cuyper, Phoelich and van Lith pass him by and quickly fell outside the top five. It was now Nick van Hout who came through in fifth. Due to the battle behind him, Haverdil quickly gained an advantage over De Cuyper. Once past the Cuyper, it was again Phoelich who managed to close the gap and pass him. De Cuyper also saw van Lith pass him by and a little later he had to recognize his superior in the advancing Smits, who had now passed van Hout. De Cuyper quickly retired after this and it was Van Hout who again came through in fifth. Phoelich now had a nice lead over Haverdil and again crossed the finish line as the winner ahead of Haverdil. Smits showed his tandem again and managed to pass van Lith to finish third. In the battle for fifth place, van Hout was passed on the last lap by van Hoof, who again managed to finish fifth.
Phoelich is now in the lead in the standings of the ONK quads. However, there is no clarity behind that yet. The big question remains whether last week's first heat in Berghem counts.
This heat was flagged with a red flag before half the time had elapsed and according to the KNMV's own regulations it should not count. There was no restart of this round mainly due to a lack of time and the KNMV has not yet made an official announcement regarding this situation and has so far left the participants in the dark. However, in both cases, Phoelich now has the red plate.
