Goeyvaerts/Smeuninx strongest in tough Berghem
The first competition of the National Sidecar Championships resulted in a Belgian victory. It was Stan Goeyvaerts/Thomas Smeuninx who managed to win several heats on a very tough circuit. Wilfred Vos/Wessel Susebeek took second place twice and were also second in the daily rankings. Aaron Bens/Joep van Leuken were also allowed to make their way to the podium.
First heat
The holeshot was for Goeyvaerts/Smeuninx ahead of Kevin van Vaerenberg/Niki Debruyne and Bens/van Leuken. Van Vaerenberg/Debruyne took over the lead on the first lap and the front three quickly took the lead over Stacey van der Veldt/Alex van der Veldt and Wilfred Vos/Wessel Susebeek. It was Bens/van Leuken who were the first of the three leaders to run into problems and fell back to fifth place. Vos/Susebeek had now passed van der Veldt/van der Veldt to finish third. In the meantime, the battlefield of the first round was no longer visible. Team after team had run into problems in the heavy Berghem sand and Van Vaerenberg/Debruyne also had problems and fell back a few places. Goeyvaerts/Smeuninx thus win the heat with more than 20 seconds ahead of Vos/Susebeek, with Bens/van Leuken directly behind them and van der Veldt/van der Veldt well behind them. Van Vaerenberg/Debruyne had to make do with fifth place in the heat.
Second heat
Goeyvaerts/Smeuninx took control from the start and were in the lead for the entire heat. At first it was Vaerenberg/Debruyne who were second, but it was soon Vos/Susebeek who were the only ones able to stay in the wake of Goeyvaerts/Smeuninx. Coming from sixth place, Bens/van Leuken also passed Vaerenberg/Debruyne to see the checkered flag in third place. Van der Veldt/van der Veldt finished the heat in fifth place.
