What did MX2 GP winner Jago Geerts say?
Monster Energy Yamaha Factory rider Jago Geerts recorded his second GP victory in a row – his third of the season – in Kegums, Latvia. Teammate Ben Watson missed the podium by two points in the fifth race of the FIM MX2 World Championship.
Despite his poor result in time training, Watson shot like a rocket out of the starting gate in race 1, good for his very first holeshot in the World Championship. Teammate Geerts only entered the first corner in ninth place and therefore had a lot of work ahead of him. Watson quickly lost the lead to Vialle, but was then able to maintain a good speed. Geerts had now started his way to the front. After three laps he was already in third position, right behind his British teammate. The Belgian slipped past Watson on lap 5 and then took some time to find good, new lines.
With 10 minutes to go, Geerts started his catch-up race. Round by round he came closer. The Balenaar planned the ultimate attack in the last round, but then things went wrong. Geerts jumped on the doubled Haavisto, who did not move far enough to the side. Jago crashed, but was able to climb back onto his YZ250FM and hold on to second place, just ahead of a strong Watson.
The start of the second race was almost a copy of the first race for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Team. One difference: both riders switched places. This time the holeshot went to Geerts, while Watson entered the first corner in ninth place. Geerts was immediately followed by Vialle, who continued to push for almost the entire series. But no matter how hard the Frenchman tried, Iago did not succumb to his pressure. Series and GP victory for Geerts, his third this season. Watson still had some time to find the right rhythm and speed. Once found, he moved up a few more spots to finish fifth, good for fourth place in the Grand Prix. Geerts remains second in the world championship, eight points behind leader Vialle. Watson moves forward one spot and is now seventh.
Jago Geerts: “Another good day, with another victory. Too bad about that crash with the doubled rider in the first row. He might have stepped aside a little more, but he certainly didn't do it voluntarily. So I don't blame him. I am especially satisfied with my second series. Vialle kept following me closely, but I was still in control from start to finish. He came close, but never close enough. Three GP victories in five races, not bad. I hope I can continue like this.”
Marnicq Bervoets: “First and fourth place, a good result from our boys. Of course we dream of seeing them both around the stage. Jago is now a regular in the top three, Ben is getting better every week. His first series was very regular, in the second series he needed too much time to get back to normal. And Jago… Third GP victory of the year. Good looking. Especially the way he reacted after the crash with that doubled rider. He then 'simply' takes the holeshot and controls the race while Vialle is constantly breathing down his neck. Terrific food.”
