VRT report: the loudest mountain in Flanders!
At the end of June, the VRT started a series about “Visming places” in Flanders. VRT journalist Jos Vandervelden and photographer Alexander Dumarey scour places where people once partied, danced, celebrated and enjoyed themselves. The old traces of those places have been swept away and passers-by rarely realize that they have history under their feet. This is how the two ended up on the Kesselberg in Leuven.
In 1954, the Kesselberg became the loudest mountain in Flanders and subsequently found peace again thanks to a decision in 1972. It received definitive protection with a ban on "racing with mechanical equipment".
There was a time when motocross riders such as René Baeten, Joël Robert and Roger De Coster stole the “National Trophy for Sports Merit” from football players, cyclists and athletes. When Sportweekend started with a report on motocross racing and the public stood in the mud on Sunday to cheer on its sporting heroes. It was an episode in which loud engines and the smell of gasoline and motor oil made hearts beat faster. It was 1954, the Kesselberg above Leuven was transformed into a motocross terrain and immediately the loudest mountain in Flanders.
