Thibault Benistant the new leader in the EMX250
It was very close to Thibault Benistant (photo) winning both heats during the second race of the European 250cc Championship. The Frenchman finished first and second on the Kegums circuit, but that also gave him the day's victory. In addition, the Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing rider is the new leader in the championship. The big winner of Valkenswaard, Bastian Boegh-Damm, remains scoreless during this match at Motocenter Zelta Zirgs. Mattia Guadagnini (5-1) finishes second in the daily rankings ahead of Isak Gifting (2-4). The best Laaglander is Kay de Wolf, the Husqvarna rider is sixth overall, Liam Everts is 18th, Marcel Conijn 20th and Twan van Essen is 25th.
In the first heat, Benistant took control of the race and won by a wide margin. Gifting came second ahead of his compatriot Tim Edberg. Fourth place goes to Jorgen-Matthias Talviku and Guadagnini is fifth.
Later in the afternoon, Meico Vettik takes the best, but he quickly comes under pressure from Boegh-Damm. The WZ Racing rider was left out of the points in the first round, so he has something to make up for. The Dane tries to distance himself, but after ten minutes of the match Guadagnini takes the lead. The Maddi Racing rider seems to be going to win the race with a safe lead, but Benistant thinks differently. The former EMX125 champion managed to attack the Italian in the final phase and even took over the lead. However, the Yamaha rider briefly misses the circuit and Guadagnini returns to the lead. It is exciting until the finish, but the victory belongs to the Italian before the Frenchman. Talviku comes third at a considerable distance, ahead of Gifting and De Wolf. Conijn scores 13th and Everts crosses the finish line in 16th. The last point goes to Van Essen, the Marchetti Racing rider crosses the finish line in 20th.
The championship continues next Tuesday in Kegums!
