Jeffrey Herlings wins in his former backyard
Jeffrey Herlings lived in the village of Handel for many years as a child. This house was located next to the 'Circuit Bezuidenhout', so Herlings could regularly be found on this circuit. The KTM rider was also present today during the first race of the KNMV Open Dutch Championship 500cc. As expected, he won both heats, Micha Boy de Waal (6-2) came second ahead of Rene de Jong (4-3).
In the time training, 25-year-old Herlings set the fastest time, but he did not take the holeshot. It is De Waal who takes the lead for Herlings. The Husqvarna rider manages to hold the lead on the first lap, but then he makes a mistake. Herlings takes the lead and the Alpinestars-clad crosser is followed by Greg Smets and Ceriel Klein Kromhof who, after stopping for a while, is back behind the starting gate. 'CKK' manages to hold on to third place for more than 15 minutes, but then De Waal passes by. However, this one goes wrong and then there is Hool. The Limburger is also back behind the starting gate and he has not forgotten it yet. Hool comes third ahead of De Jong and Kevin van Geldrop.
The second heat will be a show of power from Herlings who wins with a two minute lead. De Waal rides in second place for the entire race, but he is completely alone. In the second laps Smets runs into problems, causing Lars Greekpoor to take over third place. The North Hollander will no longer relinquish this position. De Jong is now fourth after coming thirteenth from the first round. Van Geldrop now completes the top five.
