Surprising victory Cairoli, Herlings 3rd & Van Horebeek 5th
The course of the first MXGP round was difficult to predict. After a tumultuous start, Tony Cairoli seized power and would not relinquish it. Immediately the 177th series victory for the Italian. Romain Febvre came 2nd ahead of Jeffrey Herlings. Jeremy Van Horebeek hung in 2nd for a long time, but had to settle for P30 after 5 minutes plus two laps.
The first MXGP round started with a lot of commotion. In the first corner pole sitter Jasikonis, Herlings, Paulin, Vlaanderen and Bobryshev crashed. Tim Gajser was screwed a little further on. Lead starter Jorge Prado also had bad luck. After two laps the Spaniard had to come in due to a broken front wheel. Surprising names at the start of the race such as Brian Bogers and Ivo Monticelli, both in the top 5.
Gajser gives up
A second hard fall was too much for reigning world champion Gajser. The HRC Honda rider hurt his starting leg and lower back and gave up. In the meantime, the series of top players who fought their way to the front provided a top spectacle. Jeffrey Herlings came back to P3 with Jeremy Seewer on his wheel. An amazing achievement considering his deficit at the start of the race!
Glenn Coldenhoff, the great triumphant last Sunday, was regular but was less effective this time. The GasGas star driver finished 7th. Jasikonis also came from a long way back. The Factory Husqvarna pilot finished 8th, while Bogers managed a 10th place. Desalle now held up well and finished sixth. At the front Cairoli rode like in his best days. It was his first series victory since May last year in Mantova…
