Motocross world in mourning after the sudden death of Dirk Geukens
Completely unexpectedly, Dirk Geukens (57) died suddenly last night. The former Belgian 500cc champion was not feeling well in the early evening, but no one could have seen this coming. Dirk probably died as a result of heart failure.
Despite a late start as a motocross rider, the sympathetic Kempen resident achieved a very impressive record. Geukens won bronze twice in the final standings of the 500cc World Championship (1990, 1991), won two GPs and competed twice for the Belgian team in the Motocross des Nations. He gained fame especially as a Honda privateer in the colors of Shokonfex. In the twilight of his career, Geukens became a factory driver for the “Husaberg Fourstroke Force” team of Joël Smets and Ludo Van Der Veken.
For years after his professional retirement, he traditionally made an appreciated guest appearance during the motocross of the Keiheuvel in Balen. Dirk was also involved with Motorsport Future from the beginning and remained committed to motocross. For example, he guided fellow villager Jago Geerts.
The MXMag editorial team is shocked by this hard blow and wishes wife Gerda, his children Nick and Lien, family and friends a lot of strength in this difficult period.
