2021 KTM SX range: major changes
Anyone who thought that KTM - given the circumstances - would mainly limit itself to a style exercise for the 2021 model year will be disappointed. After all, the Austrian manufacturer is coming up with a truckload of innovations. The completely newly developed myKTM app, although an option, is one of the showpieces.
KTM also dominated the sporting debates last season. Whether it was the Supercross world title of Cooper Webb (KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION, the second consecutive MX2 world title of Jorge Prado (KTM 250 SX-F) the 13 MXGP podium places with three different riders or the strong performances in the youth series .
The KTM R&D department therefore had many opportunities to collect feedback when updating the SX model series for model year 2021. Below you will find all updates listed. Or you can also view them in this video.
Renewed WP forks and dampers
KTM's main goals for their new MX range? To create the lightest, best-handling, most powerful, most effective and most equipped motocross bikes so that riders of all ages and all levels can find the total technical package they need.
On all 2021 models, the suspension and chassis have been modified and the engine architecture has been tweaked to increase reliability. The WP Regarding the tires for the KTM SX models, Dunlop's Geomax MX-33 was chosen due to its versatility and proven racing performance.
Four-stroke: SX-F 250, SX-F 350 and SX-F 450
The top model in the four-stroke series, the KTM 450 SX-F, benefits from modifications to the piston, crankshaft, engine housing, rocker arms and gear locker. These adjustments make the engine even more reliable, reduce the weight of the engine and make general maintenance even easier.
Additionally, the 2021 KTM 450 SX-F and the new KTM 350 SX-F and KTM 250 SX-F can connect to the myKTM app via an additional Connectivity unit which can be ordered from the KTM PowerParts catalogue. This way you can adapt the engine yourself, without technical support, to your personal wishes and current circumstances. The myKTM app allows a large number of different technical parameters to be set on site. Until recently, this privilege was only reserved for KTM factory riders.
It is clear that KTM has put a lot of effort into the user-friendliness of the myKTM application. However, this type of connectivity for easy adjustment is not new. Yamaha introduced it for their four-stroke dirt bikes three years ago. According to KTM, the complete system is the most advanced of its kind available.
Two-strokes: 125 SX, 150 SX and 250 SX
The KTM 125 SX comes with new internals for the pistons and gearbox for the 2021 model year. Together with its Husqvarna brother, the KTM has been the reference in the 125cc market for many years. Thanks to an excellent power-to-weight ratio, everything indicates that the two-stroke SXs will extend their leadership. The improvements of the KTM 125 SX have also been implemented on the KTM 150 SX. Given the Belgian and Dutch regulations, the latter falls between two stools.
Those who want a little more oomph can of course opt for the quarter-liter two-stroke: 250 SX. However, for 2021 it will have to make do with less drastic changes than the 12 5SX and the 150SX.
Sports minicycles
The youth motorcycles have also been completely redesigned by KTM for 2021. For example, the KTM 85 SX, KTM 65 SX, KTM 50 SX and KTM 50 SX MINI are equipped with a new throttle control that ensures a more precise, smoother response to the throttle control. . The KTM 85 SX has much greater braking power thanks to larger brake discs and a completely newly developed FORMULA braking system front and rear.
The three junior motocross riders now all have tapered handlebars to allow for ODI lock handlebars to be fitted. A much-appreciated update for small hands: Thinner handlebars can now be fitted to the KTM 50 SX and KTM 50 SX MINI thanks to the tapered handlebars.
“Our technicians in Mattighofen and in the US will not rest on their laurels, because development never stands still. Based on feedback from top Motocross and Supercross racers around the world, we have managed to develop the most technically advanced series of motocross racers ever for the 2021 model year. We proudly bring these models to the market. Model year 2021 models deliver industry-leading performance across the board thanks to sophisticated improvements. In addition, the models have also been given a modern racing look. In 2021 we will also introduce the myKTM app for all models with four-stroke engines. This app is an advanced tool designed to help riders get the best out of themselves and their bikes”, thus Joachim Sauer, Product Manager Offroad at KTM.
