Tomac vs. Roczen in Salt Lake City
Seven races of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship will be held in three weeks from Sunday, May 31. These matches in Salt Lake City's Rice-Eccles Stadium will determine who will win the title. The battle seems to be between Eli Tomac and Ken Roczen, both riders are fighting for their first title in the premier class! However, they do not have complete free rein because reigning champion Cooper Webb follows 29 points behind leader Tomac.
After ten races, the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship came to an early 'end'. In Daytona, Tomac won ahead of the German, meaning the Kawasaki rider once again had sole possession of the 'Redplate'. Then the corona crisis breaks out and we all notice the consequences almost every day.
Tomac therefore has a three-point lead over the former MX2 world champion. Of the ten matches, the 27-year-old American won five, three victories went to Roczen while Webb and Justin Barcia each managed to win one. As a three-time AMA Motocross Champion, Tomac knows what it is like to win a title, but he has missed 'Indoor' time and time again in recent years, even though he managed to win the most competitions. Another advantage is that the intermediate leader lives and trains at altitude. Kawasaki has also rented a local supercross circuit for three weeks to train between events. Tomac will have to score consistently because the son of Mountian bike legend John was 'only' on the podium six times compared to the Honda rider's eight podium finishes. All eyes are on this duo, but you should certainly not lose sight of Webb. The KTM rider has already managed to climb onto the podium seven times this year, but due to twelfth place in St Louis and Arlington he has lost the connection.
We will know more in three weeks and then it will become clear who wins the championship. In the coming weeks, Salt Lake City will be the center of the motocross world as competitions everywhere are at a standstill. On Monday morning (European time) it will all become clear when the first race has been held. This will be followed by competitions on June 3, 7, 10, 14, 17 and 21!
