Nancy van de Ven speaks about the corona crisis
Nice ride, but dissatisfied with the results. That is the summary of the first two games of Nancy van de Ven's season in the women's world championship. The corona crisis therefore came at a bad time for last season's number two in the world.
How are you?
"I'm doing well. I am healthy, but I do notice the consequences of the coronavirus in my environment. One of my friend's grandfathers died from it, as did the grandmother of one of my mechanics. There are people who think all these measures in the Netherlands are nonsense, but corona is really dangerous. My friend's grandfather was a vital, eighty-year-old man who never went to the doctor. He gets corona and dies from it. Then it gets close.”
How do you pass the time during the corona crisis?
“I can now train again and ride my bike twice a week. I don't want to overload myself because if the season resumes, it will be at the end of the year. This means that many races are held in a short time. You don't want to be burned out. But I will continue with my physical workouts so that I am fit when needed. My life has changed quite a bit in recent months. Normally I like to run, fly and rush. I get up early in the morning and when I go to bed in the evening, I fall asleep like a log. Over the past few months I suddenly had time on my hands. I trained for a few hours and then I could play with my niece and nephew, for example. And in the evening I suddenly had time to watch a movie or series. Unknown. I really appreciate that extra time with my family.”
And now that the measures are being relaxed, are you busy again?
“Yes, quite a bit. In addition to crossbreeding, I have my own company in eyelash extensions. I have recently been able to receive customers again and it is busy. All those girls come over, so I don't get bored.”
Have you also discovered new hobbies during the corona crisis?
“No, I just picked up old hobbies. I went fishing a number of times with my brother and friends. I also occasionally do inline skating, including at a skating rink in the area.”
What did you miss the most?
"The games. And especially the feeling in the days before a match. Then you feel a bit of tension in you, you become nervous. I miss that feeling, just like the moment you stand behind the starting gate. The adrenaline pumping through your veins and when the gate falls you completely exhaust yourself during the race. Delicious."
How do you view the future?
“I don't know if there will be any racing this season, I doubt it. But next year will also be exciting. Will all countries open again to visitors? But I'm not really concerned with that at the moment. I'll wait to see how this season ends. This also applies to my sponsors. I hope they recover from all the damage. Because if they disappear, we as motocross riders will be in serious trouble.”
