Michelin in frontal attack against Covid-19!
Tire giant Michelin is also making an effort in the fight against the global Covid-19 pandemic. This month, production of mouth masks and face shields will start in 10 European factories.
Since the start of the health crisis, a global race against time has been going on to increase the number of available face masks in France and worldwide. To respond to this emergency, the Michelin Group has mobilized the enormous innovation capacity of its teams and expertise in research, materials, Manufacturing, scientific observation, etc. mobilized for the development, production and delivery of different types of face masks, within a very short period of time and in large quantities.
With this initiative, Michelin wants to actively contribute to the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, both by donating larger quantities of face masks to healthcare workers in the countries where Michelin is located and by providing face masks to its own employees to protect their health and safety. to protect.
Michelin starts production of surgical face masks*
After the start-up phase, Michelin will eventually produce almost 400.000 class 1 surgical face masks every week, in its own workshops or in collaboration with partners or suppliers. Ten locations** have already been selected in Europe, including La Combaude in Clermont-Ferrand (France), Olsztyn (Poland) and Zalău (Romania). European capacity will be expanded in the coming weeks thanks to the implementation of similar initiatives in North America.
Development of reusable mask
In addition, Michelin is working with other companies to develop and implement a reusable mask on a large scale, on the initiative and under the leadership of the VOC-COV collective in Grenoble. Developed and produced in record time in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, this FMP1 or FMP2 mask called OCOV® is cost-effective, durable and can be produced in large quantities. It can be used up to 100 times thanks to five washable and interchangeable filters.
An initial series of 5.000 units of the prototype is currently being produced. The aim is to reach a production capacity of one million masks during May and a capacity of more than five million masks by the end of June, the equivalent of 500 million disposable masks.
Sterilizable polycarbonate face shields for hospitals
At the request of several French hospitals, Michelin has also started producing sterilizable polycarbonate face shields for use by medical staff. Starting next week, the Group will coordinate the outsourced production of 10.000 face shields. Finally, Michelin is involved in many other projects for the supply of ventilators, parts for medical equipment, patient positioning cushions and hydroalcoholic gel.
In short, Michelin uses all its knowledge and all possible resources to fight against the coronavirus!
