The Husqvarna TX 300i: the Austrian experiment!
In the middle of last year, the promotion department of Husqvarna Motorcycles catapulted all the new models for 2020 into the world. The premium brand of the KTM group wants to be at home in all markets and has an even wider range on its shelves than before. The announcement of the TX 300i was striking. This Husky was sneakily added to the already extensive range of new models and is only available for the American market. Our curiosity immediately went into red alarm mode!
The Husqvarna TX 300i looks like a dirt bike. It is a 300cc two-stroke and equipped with injection. The brand itself says the following about this machine: “The TX 300i represents the constant development and securing the future of the historic 300cc 2-stroke in the Husqvarna off-road range. Featuring the latest technology, the TX 300i is a purpose-built closed 2-stroke racing machine with off-road specific features. A larger fuel tank, an 18-inch rear wheel and a side stand increase the TX's usability for its intended purpose. In addition, the lightweight two-stroke engine is efficient using modern electronic fuel injection, centralizes mass and has very low vibration thanks to an opposed balance shaft. As a result, the TX 300i offers a refined and manageable closed racing package. "
What is the TX 300i really?
The Husqvarna TX300i fuel injected two-stroke is a melting pot of ideas. It's part enduro bike, part dirt bike and part science project. It's not built for slow walks in the woods. It's not built for motocross. It is equipped with a six-speed gearbox, measures 300cc and has fuel injection. It is designed for fast rides through open countryside and desert races. It's an Austrian attempt to bring fuel injection to motocross machines and the TX 300i is a step in that direction. A two-stroke engine with fuel injection was unthinkable five years ago.
Racing a two-stroke with fuel injection is no different than racing a carburetor. It's still as it always has been, but the sound and sensations are very unique. The specific two-stroke sound now seems a bit more “brushed off”. The engine has an electric starter but you can optionally add a kick. The rear wheel is an 18 inch, the fuel tank is larger than a dirt bike. It also has a side stand, but you can remove that.
KTM introduced two-stroke injection to the market a few years ago. They did this after many years of development. The enduros had the technology applied to their motorcycles and from then on it was a matter of waiting for it to penetrate the motocross machines. The Husqvarna TX 300i is perhaps a first tentative attempt to install TPI (Twin Port Injection) on a dirt bike. Therefore, the Husky is neither meat nor fish. Don't go to the store, you can't buy this bike here through the official channels, but that could change quickly. Our colleagues from Motocross Action Magazine released the Husky on a motocross track, see how that went below.
