American superstar Marty Smith has passed away!
Former American motocross racer Marty Smith is no more. He was driving a buggy in California's Imperial Sand Dunes yesterday with his wife Nancy and a couple friends. The foursome somersaulted, seriously injuring Marty and Nancy.
His friend tried to keep Marty Smith's airways clear until emergency services arrived. Smith died in the arms of his friend and all help came too late for his wife Nancy. This tragic accident causes deep sadness in the US because Smith was a real motocross star.
Marty Smith was a charismatic athlete who had a very large following in the US. He was very successful in the mid-70s and pushed the sport to the next level. He won 3 AMA titles and won three GPs in 1976. That year he rode a full World Championship campaign in the 125cc class, winning races in Italy (Livorno), Denmark (NisseBjerget), and the US (Lexington). He finished fourth in the World Cup that year after many technical problems. Smith rode a Honda for many years and was for many the very first American motocross superstar. He was 63 years old. The editors wish the family and friends of Marty and Nancy a lot of strength.
