World Championship Sidecar Cross calendar overhauled by Corona, GP Sidecars in Lommel disappears!
The now worldwide outbreak of the Coronavirus and the postponement or cancellation of events by governments and authorities also affects the Sidecar Cross Championships. Promoter WSC released an amended calendar with some changes that all parties involved have agreed to. Unfortunately for the fans in the Benelux, the planned GP in Lommel also falls victim to the Corona measures and disappears completely from the calendar. The Dutch GP in Oss has been moved to June 13/14, 2020, making it the second GP on the calendar
In a statement about the amended World Cup calendar, promoter WSC stated that the amended calendar is currently the best achievable. Because Oss has moved to June 13/14 and Lommel was scheduled a week later, it was decided to cancel Lommel. Lommel and Oss are within a radius of seventy kilometers from each other and therefore both events on these sand courts would 'bite' each other in terms of spectators and it is believed that this cannot be done to the organizing clubs. One of the two 'sand' Grand Prix would therefore disappear and with the mutual consent of WSC, the Belgian association, the organizing club and the FIM, Lommel has disappeared from the calendar. The GP in Kramolin/Czech Republic, which was initially planned, will now take place on June 22/23.
The French Sidecar Cross GP will also most likely be held a week later than planned, on July 4/5. The reason given in the same statement is that the previously scheduled French MXGP is moving to the date on which Iffendic was scheduled and therefore the sidecars have to make room for this weekend. Two Motocross GPs in the same country in the same weekend would be too much and so the sidecars will be postponed by a week. A statement confirming this change will probably be released next Monday.
