VIDEO: the 1997 MXoN in Nismes!
In the most important motocross event of the year, the Americans have been lords and masters for years. Since their first victory in 1981, they have been virtually unbeatable, but in 1997 two Belgians became world champions a few weeks before the match in question in Nismes. That fact creates high expectations.
Roger De Coster sends a strong team to Belgium and our national coach selects Stefan Everts, Joël Smets and Marnicq Bervoets for this edition of the Nations. That Sunday morning, the circuit near the French border looks radiant and it promises to be a legendary day. However, Joël Robert has the track flooded excessively just before the start of the three series, knowing that the Americans thoroughly hate this kind of situation. The circuit is very slippery and large puddles have appeared everywhere.
In the video below you can see a summary of this legendary MXoN where the Belgians won the Peter Chamberlain Trophy. Smets, Everts and Bervoets proudly wear this extra feather in their cap and shine on stage. And the grin on Joël Robert's face has never disappeared since.
