Mikkel Haarup starts GP season on the podium!
The FIM MXGP-MX2 World Championship has started and it did not go without a hitch. It was very turbulent on the Matterley Basin circuit and that brought out the best in Mikkel Haarup. The Dane had a particularly good first race, the F&H Kawasaki Racing rider finished third in both heats. He managed to take his first GP podium very well! Roan van de Moosdijk finished eighth near Winchester and Mathys Boisrame was good for tenth place after not having had any motorcycle training for a number of weeks due to his hand injury. With three riders in the top ten, the South Holland team can look back on a very good start. The first match of the season was won by Jago Geerts.
1st Round
On Saturday, Mikkel took pole position ahead of Roan in second position and Mathys can go to the starting gate in tenth. The Frenchman has a very good start and he comes out of the first corner in second! He manages to hold this position for more than 15 minutes. Mathys still lacks some engine rhythm and makes some mistakes, which means he drops back to ninth place. Mikkel is one of the riders who passes Mathys and the Dane duels with Beaton for second place. It's a great battle, but the Australian doesn't bow down and Mikkel finishes third behind Geerts and Beaton! Roan finishes the first full lap in tenth place and after about 20 minutes he also manages to pass his teammate Mathys. The 19-year-old Eindhove native crosses the finish line in ninth place and Mathys still scores good points with a fourteenth place during this first round of the season.
2st Round
The start of the second heat is less good, but both Mikkel and Mathys finish the first round in the top ten. The 18-year-old Dane managed to complete the first full lap in eighth place, after which he fought back very strongly to third place! This great performance means he can also climb onto the podium for the daily rankings! Mathys, from the Rennes region, has been working hard in recent weeks to recover from his hand injury. The 21-year-old rider did not participate in any spring competitions, but he performed very well. In the second moto he crosses the finish line in seventh place with the Motul-lubricated KX250F. Roan manages to work his way up to eleventh place in the initial phase, but Australian Crawford prevents the EMX250 champion from entering the top ten. With eleventh place in this second round, Roan becomes eighth in the daily rankings of the British GP and is looking forward to his home GP next week!
