Marnicq Bervoets about the Valkenswaard chances of Jago Geerts
MX2 World Championship leader Jago Geerts started his Dutch GP convincingly. The Monster Energy Yamaha factory rider raced to the holeshot and took the qualifying win with a more than 14-second bonus over rival Tom Vialle. Tomorrow Geerts will have an excellent opportunity to win the Grand Prix of Valkenswaard for the first time!
Team manager Marnicq Bervoets was twice the best in Valkenswaard. His 19-year-old poulain was already a huge favorite in advance. After his strong performance today, a second consecutive victory is even more in line with expectations. After all, Geerts is at the start with the red leader plate and the circuit suits him perfectly.
Marnicq Bervoets: “Every weekend is important. Of course, we already knew that before the season. Last year Jago finished third in the World Championship, and the World Championship MX2 world champion Jorge Prado switched to the MXGP. Then there is a good chance that you can compete for a GP victory every weekend. Everyone has worked hard towards that.”
Perhaps for the first time, Jago now starts a match as favorite. Is that a disadvantage?
Bervoets: “I wouldn't put it that way. Of course, you keep that victory in mind. Close to home it is as good as a home game with many Belgian supporters. If you can successfully complete that, it gives extra satisfaction. That's why I consider it more of a positive incentive.”
Jago is already on schedule thanks to the pole he captured today. That probably gives you confidence.
Bervoets: “Iago has to decide for himself how he views this. Personally, I think it's better to be the first to go to the starting gate! They expect a lot of rain, so it is an asset that you can be the first to choose your place behind the fence.”
What will be the deciding factor tomorrow?
Bervoets: “Valkenswaard is a very tough circuit, especially now. Finding a rhythm you can maintain is crucial. In such races everyone makes mistakes, but you still have to try to limit the mistakes. In addition, physical condition is very important. Always remain in control and still have the reflex to properly anticipate when things threaten to go wrong.”
Jago has made a flying start in his World Cup campaign. Can you even manage such a championship?
Bervoets: “No, that is not the case. I think the MX2 World Championship is an open championship. Also with several new names that are making themselves felt. Just think of Mikkel Haarup last week, or Rene Hofer who made a handsome entrance into Matterley Basin. There may be other names this weekend. You just have to be at the front all the time, every GP.”
The first blow is worth a dollar, they say in the Netherlands?
Bervoets: “Bah, what's happening now is no surprise. Everyone knew this was coming for Iago. He is one of the favorites. There is therefore no question of additional pressure.”
Who knows, your poulain could already be closing in on your record. You won here twice?
Bervoets: “'(Pointing to Jago.) What I say about him in interviews doesn't really interest Jago. (laughing) He doesn't listen to that! But Valkenswaard was definitely my thing, it was a circuit where I could really enjoy myself. I have a lot of good memories here, often reached the podium and won in both the 250cc and 500c. Hopefully we will also be in the winning camp tomorrow!”
