Jeffrey Herlings wins the first grand prix of 2020!
Today the battle for the first points for the MXGP World Championship took place in the British Matterley Basin. In this first battle for points, Dutchman Jeffrey Herlings has already been crowned the winner. The Red Bull KTM pilot managed to control the first heat from lead to finish and cleverly settled for second place in the difficult conditions of series two. These two results were more than enough for the Grand Prix victory and also the first “Red Plate” of the season.
In the first series won by Jeffrey Herlings, we saw the Swiss Jeremy Seewer finish second and the MXGP Rookie Mitchell Evans finish third. Italian Antonio Cairoli, who is currently suffering from a shoulder and knee injury, finished in fourth place, ahead of Clément Desalle and Glenn Coldenhoff. Jeffrey Herlings' big challenger for the title; Tim Gajser had a disastrous start in which he crashed after just three corners. After a frantic chase in which he made a few mistakes, the reigning world champion in the MXGP class was able to limit the damage by finishing eighth, just behind the Frenchman Gautier Paulin and ahead of the reigning MX2 world champion Jorge Prado and Henry Jacobi.
The second series became one for Tim Gajser in which he took revenge on himself. The HRC-Honda pilot had to narrowly leave the holeshot to Henry Jacobi, but a few meters later he took over the lead and would never look back at the competition. The reigning world champion was least intimidated by the dangerous conditions created by the low sun, and won by more than twenty seconds ahead of Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli. The Wilvo Yamaha pilot Gautier Paulin crossed the finish line in fourth place and Clément Desalle repeated his result from the first heat with a fifth place. The brand new GASGAS pilot Glenn Coldenhoff in turn finished in sixth place.
The other lowlanders
As you could already deduce from the text above, Matterley Basin was a good Grand Prix for Jeffrey Herlings, Clément Desalle and Glenn Coldenhoff. Jeffrey Herlings won the Grand Prix and Clément Desalle managed to score a seventh place overall with two fifth places. Glenn Coldenhoff in turn scored an eighth place in the overall result by finishing sixth twice. Unfortunately, they were the only ones to record a top ten ranking.
Brian Bogers scored seventeenth place and thirteenth place overall, making the KTM pilot two places better than Jeremy Van Horebeek, who is in seventeenth place in the total Grand Prix result. The Honda SR Motoblouz achieved this position with a fourteenth and seventeenth place in the races. Calvin Vlaanderen competing for the Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha team achieved two points. The South African Dutchman did this by finishing nineteenth in the first heat, but in the second heat he failed to score in place thirty-one. These two results placed him in twenty-third place in the Grand Prix results. Kevin Strijbos (21-21) in turn scored no points and was classified in twenty-fourth place overall, just ahead of compatriot Brent Van Doninck (22-22) in twenty-fifth place.
