Mixed feelings for Benoit Paturel
The only JM Honda Racing rider, Benoit Paturel, posted a consistent speed throughout the weekend in Valkenswaard. In the final standings, the fast Frenchman shared 15th place. Still, his 11-24 scores were not a good representation of his performance and effort.
In the first home GP of the season, Benoit got off to a good start on Saturday. The fact that trainer Joël Roelants' group did his homework well this winter was evident from the ease with which Paturel sprinted over the tough, sandy course. Starting within the top 20, he steadily worked his way to the front in the qualifying race and crossed the line in 13th. Unfortunately, Benoit had to lose five places as the engine had exceeded the limit during the random noise control.
All in all, the demanding Eurocircuit had weathered the rain of the past few days well. However, there was little sun the next day, while the precipitation hardly stopped. The #6 JM Honda Racing got off to a mediocre start in the first series. Paturel, however, immediately attacked and remounted strongly. From a position in the middle of the field he rose to 7th position to finally finish 11th.
The second heat presented itself promisingly. Now the former GP winner sent his CRF450R to a great start. Benoit came fourth at the end of the straight, but unfortunately things went wrong in the fast chicane. Paturel was tagged behind and immediately fell to the ground. As a result, he was the last to return to work. From an almost hopeless position he fought his way back to P16. However, two mistakes and just as many falls ultimately ruined 'Big Ben'. In his last crash, Benoit actually got a wet(er) suit when he ended up in the ditch.
Benoit Paturel: “In terms of speed it was okay. We had a small problem at the end of the first heat, but overall it was a good race. In the second series I was a bit lucky. Of course it's a shame not to score points after so much hard work, but that's racing. The second race in particular was very intense. To be honest, I have never seen Valkenswaard so tough! Either way, the overall feeling is positive. Everyone is working hard, we are moving forward step by step and together we are moving in the right direction.”
Jackie Martens: “Valkenswaard was just a great weekend for the team. Benoit fought hard and showed a tight pace. His second start was great, but unfortunately Jorge Prado hit him from behind. In any case, there were many positive points on which we can build further. We also enjoyed the many partners who came to support us and who experienced the GP with us in the JM Honda Racing hospitality. We also scored well in media terms this weekend. For example, MXGP-TV came by for their annual Team Report, Honda Pro Racing made recordings... Above all, it is fantastic to see the enthusiasm of everyone who is involved with the team from far or near. That motivates everyone even more to do better!”
