“The Inside Line”: Rob Andrews writes a book about the 500cc World Championship!
During the last days of October 2019, we received a book from ex-motocross rider Rob Andrews. We were allowed to read the book in question, but we had to promise on our solemn communion soul that we would not publish anything until the release date of February 15, 2020. Now, books about our sport are regularly sent to the editors, but when reading the first pages of “ The Inside Line” we realized that this has become a unique book about the ins and outs of the GP circus in the 80s!
“Racing the 500cc World Motocross Championship” is written in yellow letters on the cover and that is literally what it is all about. In 24 chapters, Rob Andrews writes about the things he experienced as a professional motocross rider but that you never see as a regular motocross enthusiast. Andrews was not a top talent, but he was clearly present in the world of motocross GPs with their big 500cc two-strokes. At the time, this class was still the queen class of motorsport.
Going into the red for 40 minutes and two laps was for real men. During his period, Andrews had to compete against names such as Geboers, Thorpe, Jobé, Nicoll and other greats. He describes in clear writing the life he led between the GPs and during the travels through Europe on the way to the competitions. The picture he paints of the atmosphere in the riders' park as it existed in the 80s is captivating. Moreover, the motocross rider in this book is candid about contractual discussions and obligations and how he had to move heaven and earth every time to get to the other side of the canal in time.
When reading the book we went from one surprise to another because no other book so accurately describes life “on the road” as a Grand Prix driver during the last century. Here at the editorial office we have already read many books, but “The Inside Line” is without a doubt the best book we have ever read about the 500cc class.
Rob Andrews himself was a big fan of the Citadel of Namur and he has dedicated a special chapter to it. The piece about “the Monaco of motocross” is even emotional at times. To our knowledge, a book has never been published that describes in such detail what it means to be a motocross rider at grand prix level during the first weekend of August on the banks of the Maas.
The book has 400 pages, 400 photos and loads of unknown anecdotes that will leave you speechless. You get a very accurate overview of Rob's career from the very beginning to his last year in competition. Rob Andrews' new book, The Inside Line, can be ordered from today on the website theinsidelinebook.com.
