Too much mud, too many crashes for Jago Geerts
The second preparation race of the season, in the British Hawkstone Park, was not immediately a stroke of luck for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 Team. Ben Watson did not start due to a hand injury while Jago Geerts crashed a little too often and only finished eleventh.
Great Britain also did not escape Storm Ciara. Strong gusts of wind (up to 130 km/h) and rain lashed the track at Hawkstone Park. That is why the race director decided to remove the steep slope from the course.
So Ben Watson was not there in front of his own audience. The Briton injured his hand earlier in the week and did not want to take any risks with a view to the World Cup, which starts in three weeks. Jago Geerts – winner of the opening race in Riola Sardo two weeks ago – was the only Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider in action. The Belgian teenager missed his start completely in the first series, but made up many places in the first lap and finished fourth. Geerts was involved in a battle for second place with Haarup and De Wolf, when he fell in the large mud bath and had to settle for fifth place.
In the second series, Geerts shot out of the starting gate like a comet on his YZ250FM. But the fun was short-lived. In the second corner, another rider hit Jago, causing him to crash to the ground. The teenager had to start from the back of the pack, but managed to climb back into the top five quite quickly. But two falls caused him to sink far, meaning he could only get further than a disappointing 14th place.
#193 Jago Geerts
“This was a match to forget as quickly as possible. Difficult weather conditions, too many falls. At the end of the second series my thigh hit the handlebars hard. Fortunately, nothing serious, just some muscle pain. The only positive in Hawkstone Park: my start in the second series.”
