Test: 100% Brisker winter gloves
Driving in winter can be a trial. An internship in the sun can partly provide a solution, although it makes the shock even greater when you start driving in the cold again in our own little country. A body warmer or other socks provide quite some relief, but how I hate cold hands on the motorcycle!
I've seen guys wearing latex gloves under their motocross gloves and guys trying to put wool gloves over their motocross gloves. Neither method is recommended.
As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing worse than getting to the starting gate on a freezing day and then trying to warm your hands at the exhaust for about 10 minutes. If the gate falls, the blood will be gone from your hands after 2 rounds. Operating the brake and clutch levers becomes increasingly difficult and after 3 rounds you still get arm pump. You can barely feel your hands anymore. Once you get off the bike, your hands swell again. Fine!
Fortunately, it can also be done differently. With winter gloves, such as the 100% Brisker. The palm of the gloves feels just as thick as regular MX gloves. This means you still have a perfect feeling when operating the throttle and levers. However, at the top the gloves are quite thick and well insulated.
The first day of my test it was 3 degrees with no wind. My hands felt nice and warm and actually sweated a little due to the heat. The Briskers were really comfortable to ride. My only complaint: before the next session, the gloves still felt damp from sweat. Solution: Turn the gloves inside out and between sets I put them in the back of the van to dry. That worked perfectly.
My next test was in very different circumstances. Okay, it was about 6 degrees, but the wind of about 15 km/h cut to the bone. The first series I made the mistake of putting on the gloves while my hands were still cold. Then I went straight to the track. My hands never warmed up, but blood didn't drain from my hands and while it was a bit annoying to have cold hands, it didn't affect my driving.
For the next session, I made sure to put the gloves on a little earlier to get my hands warmed up before I left. This time they were perfect. Yes, my hands did get a little cold, but that didn't affect my riding. In fact, these gloves are so good that I actually felt sorry for all the guys trying to warm their hands on their exhausts!
Since then I have tested these gloves more often in cold and windy conditions. While not perfect, they are great stuff and will be part of my essential winter gear from now on. I should also add that I installed heavy duty plastic hand guards which of course also help keep the cold air off your hands. All in all, these 100% Brisker gloves are a standard set of motocross gloves designed for someone blasting around sunny California.
