Take 5; Jur van Tuil
The 2019 season is over and that means looking back but also looking ahead! In this Take 5 we speak with Jur van Tuil. The motocross rider from Wamel, Gelderland, was active in the KTM Junior MX Challenge for the second year. The Team Youth Pro MX rider managed to win the MON Dutch 50cc Championship, we spoke to him.
MXMag: This year was your second season and you have already won your first title. Did you win the MON NK 50cc, how did your season go?
JvT: “My season at the MON went well despite missing the first match. This was because it coincided with the first KNMV competition. I started in Overloon and managed to win. After that I managed to win competitions regularly, but things went wrong during the competition in Utrecht. I was in the lead until I made a mistake and was passed. On the last lap I wanted to make up the deficit and I was closing in quickly. And was able to find the connection with a few more bends to go. However, on the straight I crashed hard and hit my head on the ground. I rode the second round, but of course it wasn't that easy. After that the competition went less well, but luckily I managed to climb onto the podium many times. After the summer holidays everything was different. My confidence was back and my riding went much better, so I was often able to win the races. Which resulted in the 50cc MON NK championship in Groesbeek. I also participated in the BENEDU Cup, which is a series of exchange competitions with riders from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. I came second there, I am satisfied, but perhaps there could have been more.”
MXMag: You finished thirteenth in the KNMV ONK despite missing two matches. Are you satisfied with your season?
JvT: “My season went reasonably well. The first three-four games were very difficult. Often the first heat was bad, but then fortunately the second heat went a little better. As a result, I managed to finish around tenth place time and time again in the daily rankings. I know I can do better and I really expected more. The heavy crash during the MON race on the Utrecht circuit didn't do me any good either. After the summer holidays things went better and we also had to ride on more difficult sand circuits. That suits me better and that was immediately visible when driving. I was able to finish the last matches in the top 5.”
MXMag: How did you start racing, does anyone in your family have a history with this beautiful sport?
JvT: “Together with my dad and my brother, I once went to watch my second cousin's match in Geldermalsen. I was 3 years old at the time and since then I have been completely sold on this beautiful sport. After I obtained swimming diploma A, B and C at the age of five, I was allowed to ride a motorcycle. The first motorcycle was a KTM 50cc and that's when I made my first meters in grandpa's meadow. That was so cool! All my friends in class play football. I also played football for a year, but I just don't think it's a fun sport. The choice was made very quickly and I immediately stopped and devoted myself completely to motocross.”
MXMag: What does your schedule look like in 2020?
JvT: “The engines will be on the sidelines in the coming weeks and we will enjoy the winter break. For us, December is time for the family and for winter sports during Christmas. We will probably go to Italy at the beginning of January, but that depends on the weather conditions. During Carnival I will follow a training week in Alicante and prepare myself for the season. The plan is to train on the 65 large wheels in the winter and then make the decision after that training week whether to continue on 65 cc large wheels or to ride 65 cc small wheels for a year. I will also follow the RTC guidance program via MX Stage and hope to reach a higher level. In 2020 I will ride the KNMV ONK and the MON Youth Championship. There are also a number of club matches, but the focus is in the Netherlands.”
MXMag: What is your goal for 2020, when will this season be a success?
JvT: “For me, fun is by far the most important thing. Of course I want to drive well, but it is certainly not the case that only winning counts. I hope to finish in the top ten at the KNMV ONK and in the top five at the MON. I would also like to score a number of podium places.”
MXMag: Anything else you would like to add to this conversation?
JvT: “I would like to thank my Team Youth Pro MX for last year and for the trust that has been promised for 2020. I would also like to thank all my sponsors for the trust last year. I will do my best to make it a successful year again next year.”
MXMag: Thank you for this conversation and good luck! We will follow you!
JvT: “Thank you.”
