What are you doing? Eric Stuurman
In the #Watdoejijnou section, MXMag.nl looks at what former top crossers are doing today. Their family life and their current work. How do they look back on their career, the highs and lows. This month we have a former GP rider and a big name from Dutch motocross history; Eric Stuurman.
MXMag: Briefly introduce yourself:
ES: “My name is Eric Stuurman, born 54 years ago in Sliedrecht and living in Putten. I am an ex-motocrosser and wheelchair tennis player.”
MXMag: What do you do for a daily living these days?
ES: “I have been working at Brouwer Motors for many years, I also teach wheelchair tennis and I also sell sports wheelchairs.”
MXMag: How do you look back on your motocross career?
ES: “Very good and very positive, I experienced very nice things and would do it again in a heartbeat! Despite my heavy fall, I don't think I got out what might have been there, but that is of course an afterthought.”
MXMag: The highlight of your career?
ES: “A number of top ten places in motocross and the bronze medal in wheelchair tennis at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.”
MXMag: The low point of your career?
ES: “Without a doubt the serious fall that left me partially paralyzed and ended up in a wheelchair.”
Best motorcycle ever ridden?
ES: “Then I think back to the Kawasaki KX125 from 1986. That was a great machine!”
MXMag: What is your view on the current motocross world?
ES: “With mixed feelings because I think most of them are too circuit-oriented. The driving lines are determined by the builders of the circuits and not by the drivers. I still visit the circuits regularly, I can't live without them and I have a nephew who rides in the 125cc class. That of course gives the extra involvement, but the performance of Herlings and Coldenhoff of course gives it something extra. A very big disadvantage is the sky-high costs of driving at the highest level, which costs a lot of money. It is also very expensive to visit a Grand Prix.”
MXMag: Thank you very much for your cooperation.
ES: “You're welcome and we'll see each other at the circuits.”
