HOT: Jorge Prado under the knife after broken femur!
We already wrote it yesterday. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Jorge Prado crashed during training in Malagrotta yesterday, breaking his left femur. KTM announced in a press release that Jorge had already undergone surgery.
After his convalescent operation, Prado is still in Italy. The two-time MX2 world champion would normally make his MXGP debut in Matterley Basin. Prado was training with teammate Tony Cairoli when he lost control just before a jump.
The Spaniard was immediately transferred to the European Hospital, where he underwent corrective surgery performed by Dr. Massimiliano Nannerini. The doctor inserted a screw into the thigh during the operation. If the recovery goes well, the 18-year-old Spaniard can leave the department in two days. Because it is still (much) too early to plot a precise recovery path, KTM is currently talking about “an early possible” MXGP debut. Since the femur is the largest bone in the human body, Prado is looking at several months of rehabilitation anyway.
Claudio De Carli, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team manager: “This is bad news and we feel sorry for Jorge. Things were going well and he was only two laps away from the end of the training session. It was raining at Malagrotta and you need good control of the bike to make one of the biggest jumps on the track. Jorge couldn't clamp the bike properly with his knees and his foot slipped off the footrest. That happened when he started the jump, causing him to crash on top of the jump. He had surgery last night by a fantastic doctor who we know and trust and now we have to wait a few days to see if everything is OK before he can leave the hospital. It is a setback for our preparation, but the most important thing is that Jorge heals well and can then focus on his first season in the MXGP class.”
