ISDE Day 5: Belgian Juniors in top 5!
Especially in the morning we had to find grip in very slippery conditions. No problem for the versatile Josep Garcia who finally beat the all-powerful Daniel Sanders. For us, however, Antoine Magain's sensational performance was one of the highlights of this six-day event.
After the retirement of Jérôme Martiny, the Belgian World Trophy held on nicely in tenth place, albeit at a considerable distance from home country Portugal in P9. Wash again Mathias Van Hoof the strongman. The Belgian Inters vice-champion classified himself neatly within the objectives with a 54th time in the scratch.
However, the eyes of the off-road press on site were open Antoine Magain focused. The La Chinelle winner rode his KTM to P9 in the scratch today! Only Grant Baylor (USA) and Lyndon Snodgrass (Aus) performed better in the Junior class. So “Minimax” was the best European junior and 5th overall in the E2… Also buddy Erik Willems continues to score well. Erik was good for P31 overall today, despite some minor problems. A dogged one Mika Vanderheyden in turn did his utmost to limit the damage. The day before yesterday, Mika had a serious fall, which, among other things, left her with a painful hand. Today things clearly went a lot better for Vanderheyden Jr. That - and the engine failure of the Italian Andrea Verona - resulted in a brilliant fifth place in the standings for Team Belgium.
Although the Australians initially made up ground, the Americans fought back later in the day. This ultimately changes nothing in the standings and Team USA remains firmly in the saddle. The Italians are also quite safe as third in the World Trophy. Team USA is also in the lead among the women. There are also quite a few well-known (cross) names in the Women's World Trophy, such as Tarah Gieger, Maria Franke and Anne Borchers at Team Germany (second) and WESS rider Sandra Gomez, sister of Husqvarna factory rider Alfredo.
One more day of toil and then we will know who can collect the 94th International Six Days Enduro medals.
