Technology: The benefits of an aftermarket steering unit
Nowadays, dirt bikes are equipped with injection and therefore also with a control unit or ECU. That colored box under your seat is supplied by the motorcycle manufacturer with a number of possible mappings from which you can select. In some cases you switch mapping by inserting a plug, where other brands do this via an app on the smartphone.
By installing an aftermarket ECU, that box turns into a kind of magic box. The options suddenly become much more numerous and you understand that the engine characteristic can be adjusted entirely to your wishes. But where do those ECUs get those extra capabilities from?
Every motorcycle manufacturer delivers your motocross bike with a so-called 'global setting'. The manufacturer thus ensures that the dirt bike works worldwide at any altitude, on any terrain, in any temperature and in any climate. Moreover, this global adjustment takes the quality of the fuel into account because it is not the same everywhere. In addition, various legislation regarding emission standards must also be taken into account. You understand that this global adjustment is an average and will never get all the power out of your motocross bike.
By adjusting this global attitude, a lot of positive things can be achieved. In the video below you can see how an aftermarket ECU (in this case from Vortex) achieves gains in power and traction. The dirt bike can also be adjusted to your wishes by, for example, positioning the power at the bottom or top of the speed range. See here how a big batch of bits and bytes makes your dirt bike faster!
