ISDE day 3: US leads, Belgians in top form!
The third day of the Portuguese ISDE actually turned everything upside down! Rain and wind could not stop Australian star rider Daniel Sanders, but the Aussies were outpaced in the World Trophy by the strong American collective. More important for us: Antoine Magain, Erik Willems and Mathias Van Hoof really hit the spot.
In the World Trophy, Team Belgium moved from 11 to 9 today. The standout of the day was Beta rider Mathias Van Hoof. The ISDE debutant made his name by performing several times in the top-40 Scratch. Undoubtedly impressive, although the Herentals player lost valuable time in the penultimate special due to a technical problem. “In terms of driving, I made a change today,” Mathias said afterwards.” Finally I rode the way I know I can. The feeling and physicality are certainly still good.” Van Hoof eventually made it into the top 50, some 20 places better than yesterday!
However, Mathias was not the only Belgian who made his mark. La Chinelle winner Antoine “MiniMax” Magain showed his class with a strong 14th fastest time overall in the scratch. Not only was the KTM Belgium rider good in terms of speed, Antoine also remained consistent all day long. The highlight was of course the second test: P3 (and fastest junior for Théo Espinasse) after Albin Elowson and Ryan Sipes, our own Antoine Magain!
Although fellow junior Erik Willems (Husqvarna Belgium) is still very inexperienced in enduro, the ex-EMX300 top rider amply underlined his potential. Erik was also in excellent shape during the first few days, but probably no one would have dared to hope for a P21 overall in the scratch. In the third test, Willems drove his FE350 to a brilliant 8th place. Complex-free among the factory drivers, so to speak.
Belgium remains 8th in the Junior Trophy. The losers of the day were the British who were eliminated from the World Trophy due to a heavy fall by Joe Wootton. There's nothing left for Danny McCanney and ex-motocross racer Alex Snow to do but battle for individual accolades.
