Video: Cross champion rode a motorcycle rather than a bicycle
Deff Gijsen from Sittard can be found on a cross track three or four times a week. He travels, together with his father, across town and country to pursue his hobby. The nine-year-old motocross rider became Dutch champion on his dirt bike (MON 65 cc) at the beginning of September. And now he rides a faster, heavier motorcycle (85cc), because standing still means going backwards.
Idol
“Jeffrey Herlings is my great idol. He is world champion,” says Deff. His father Mark, who is also a rider himself, thinks it's wonderful. “Deff relies on his technique, he is good on the bike. I can't teach him much more.”
Dutch title
Deff wants to get used to his new faster bike in the coming months. It weighs about fifteen kilos more than the machine on which he won the Dutch title. He will not compete again until next calendar year.
World champion
Deff drives with number 19. Because his birthday is on October 19 and he lives at house number 19. Whether he will ever become world champion remains to be seen. “That is only for a few. When Deff is fourteen or fifteen years old, we will know whether the world title is a possibility," says father Mark. Until then, Deff and his father spend a lot of time together on the dirt track.
