Jeffrey Dewulf narrowly beaten by Nathan Watson in Loon-Plage!
With more than 850 registrations this weekend, the list of participants was full. For the second stage of the French sand championship season, the pilots were guests at the Loon-Plage circuit in Dunkirk. A week after the race in Berck-sur-Mer, it was now a 2h30 race that the pilots were served.
Today were ideal racing conditions thanks to the good weather, which was much milder than on Saturday. Jeffrey Dewulf, who finished third in Berck-sur-Mer last week, was once again one of the highlights of the weekend in Loon-Plage. The battle would take place this Sunday afternoon between the Belgian, Milko Potisek and the reigning French champion Nathan Watson.
Dewulf led the race before the second pit stop after coming back strongly from a 15th position at the start. The riders are required to make three stops and that would be decisive in the last fifteen minutes of the race. Both Dewulf and Watson make their mandatory pit stops but drive back onto the circuit without stopping.
Nathan Watson drew on the last of his strength and was able to lead Dewulf by more than 20 seconds as he started the last of the 25 laps. The Briton then took his first victory of the season ahead of Dewulf and Potisek who joined him on the podium of this 23rd Ronde des Sables. This trio also leads the provisional classification of the sand championship. Daymond Martens became the second Belgian in Loon and finished sixth. Jeremy Van Horebeek had to retire in the first half hour of the race with mechanical problems.
Romain Couprie won the quads just like last week. The Belgians Davino Bruneel and Oliver Vandendijck finished fifth and seventh respectively. The third match of the season is in Magescq on November 16 and 17.
