Jago Geerts takes silver during the MXoN!
Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha rider Jago Geerts captured the silver medal with the Belgian team in the Motocross of Nations in Assen. It is his second medal of 2019 after already finishing third in the FIM MX2 World Championship.
Assen was plagued by rain all weekend long, lots of rain. The sand course on the famous TT circuit turned into a big mess, making the race a survival journey for man and machine. Geerts did not get off to a good start in the first race (MXGP+MX2), but gradually worked his way from 29th place towards the top 10. A great performance against the much more powerful 450 engines. The Balense teenager was on his way to a nice tenth place, when he had to retire due to a technical problem, three laps from the end.
Geerts was eager to take revenge in the second race (MX2+Open). He tore around the track on his YZ250F after a weak start (30th). After six laps, Jago was already in tenth position. But he wanted more, kept moving up and finished seventh and best MX2 rider. That result, combined with the solid results of Van Horebeek (6+6) and Strijbos (17+11), gave Belgium second place in the final standings. The first podium for Belgium since Ernée in 2015.
#17 Jago Geerts
“Our goal was to be on the podium and we achieved that. Although it was not an easy task due to the bad weather conditions. After the first race it also looked bad after my DNF, but all three of us responded very strongly in the second and third races. It's really nice to be on the podium after those poor Nations in Red Bud last year. Bronze in the World Cup and now silver in the Nations: 2019 was a great year for me.”
