Herlings wins Grand Prix of Turkey!!
Jeffrey Herlings seems to be back after two injuries last season that threw a major spanner in the works. The Dutchman shattered his foot during pre-season training and broke his ankle during the warm-up lap at the Latvian Grand Prix, but all this happened to the four-time world champion. The first Grand Prix races back did not go entirely smoothly, with arm pump and a lack of race rhythm. But in Turkey the time had finally come, the Red Bull KTM pilot managed to win both heats and claim his first Grand Prix victory of the season! Jeffrey Herlings is back.
In the first moto Jeffrey Herlings managed to take the lead fairly easily from start to finish, except for a small crash. However, in the second heat the Dutchman had to fight much harder against his compatriot Glenn Coldenhoff. The Standing Construct KTM pilot quickly took the lead after the start and managed to keep it until the last lap. In this last lap, Jeffrey Herlings attacked once more on the waves where the KTM Red Bull pilot clearly developed more speed than his compatriot. Jeffrey Herlings passed Glenn Coldenhoff and also finished this series as winner.
Glenn Coldenhoff, with his third place from the first heat and his second place from heat two, was on the podium as second overall, ahead of Pauls Jonass who earned this based on his second place in heat one and his fifth place in heat two .
The other lowlanders performed well, but were of course in the shadow of the two Dutchmen who dominated the matches. Jeremy Van Horebeek finished eighth overall by finishing ninth in the first moto and seventh in the second moto. One place behind Jeremy Van Horebeek we found Kevin Strijbos in ninth place overall. The Yamaha pilot scored an eleventh place in the first moto and a ninth place in the second moto.
Brian Bogers made a good start in both heats but then collapsed, injuries that have not yet healed could possibly be an explanation for this. For the HRC Honda pilot, however, the dry reality is that he was only listed thirteenth overall in a thinned field, with a thirteenth place in the first moto and an eleventh place in the second moto. While we expect top ten finishes for some, scoring points is enough for others. Nathan Renkens (19-18) was able to collect five points in Turkey, good for nineteenth place overall. For Micha-Boy De Waal, the race day was one to quickly forget, where the Hutten Yamaha pilot distinguished himself well in the qualifying series by crossing the finish line in fifteenth place, but now he never scored any points.
